Ethos and Pathos

Ethos 1http://www.bizexpocenter.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/PETA-227×300.jpg

The emotion being conveyed in this argument is guilt and pity. With the statement “Only cowards abuse animals” PETA is conveying pity. This emotion appeals to everyone who has a soft spot for animals, which today is almost everyone. I think that PETA used this emotion here because the abuse of animals truly isn’t right and some people don’t share the same opinion.

The emotion being conveyed in this advertisement is happiness. The mother and daughter hugging and laughing shows how much happiness comes from drinking this orange juice. This emotion appeals to most everyone as well, but specifically to families or mothers. I think that the decided to convey this emotion because it shows the two laughing and smiling in bed which can lead one to believe that it is the morning which is also usually when you drink orange juice.

The emotion being conveyed in this photo is fear. An obvious form of propaganda that was likely used during the war depicts a woman being harassed by a Japanese man in a military uniform. This emotion would appeal to all Americans during the time of the war, and more specifically to women living during the war. I think that they decided to use fear in this picture because it does a very good job of convincing. They purposefully made the man look scarier with sharpened teeth and an evil look to further convince the audience.

Ethos is being established in this advertisement by appealing to the emotion of pity towards this young girl. I think that they used this here because everyone has a soft spot for cute children, especially when they are hurt or look like they are in need of help.

Ethos is being established here through the emotion of pity again. They decided to use pity here for similar reasons of the last picture; the child is sad, crying, and maybe scared and this motivates us to help him and children in general.

The Nike “Just Do It.” logo in front of a picture of a well known athlete establishes ethos by showing that you could be like him if you “Just Do It.” I think that Nike used it here because he is such a well know soccer player that a lot of people will be attracted to the advertisement.

I think that Ball State’s website is successful because it shows pictures of successful people, alluring to the fact that people who attend this school can also be successful. The intended audience of the website is people who are interested in either attending the university or people interested in sending their child to the university and I think that it does a good job of appealing to these groups by showing hard working students and graduates with successful lives.
